4 Home Remedies to Help You Get Rid of Greasy Hair
MAY 31, 2020 - LIFESTYLE

Do you have greasy hair? If you do, then you know how unpleasant it is to wake up with sticky and oily hair or it gets greasy after the gym or a long day of work. Oily hair is usually caused by using too much conditioner, not washing your hair properly, touching your hair too much (oil from hands can easily transfer to your hair this way), or simply when you don't want to brush and just make up a bun. Even if you do take care of your hair, your scalp produces excess oil ruining your hair. The main question is how to get rid of greasy hair? We have two options: artificial products or natural remedies. You can use either but I prefer natural remedies for oily hair as store-bought products give short-term results. Natural remedies don't include harsh chemicals and they are also safer and more effective.

4 Best Home Remedies for Greasy Hair

The best thing about home remedies is that you can simply grab these items from your fridge, kitchen pantry, or garden. These remedies will not take long and you will see some results after using them a few times. Usage of once or twice a week is enough. Add them to your routine and you will love how soft and nice your hair feels.

1. Yogurt

Yogurt decreases the grease in our hair as it absorbs excess oil and moisturizes the scalp. Apply a yogurt mixture and then your hair will not only feel less oily to the touch but it'll feel softer and will have a nice shine to it. I tried it and my hair is much better now.

To make the yogurt mixture, you'll need plain or non-fat yogurt, lemon juice, and baking soda. You can make the yogurt at home or use a store-bought one.

  • In a small bowl, add half a cup of yogurt, two tablespoons of lemon juice and one teaspoon of baking soda. Mix it all up until you have a smooth paste.

  • Apply this to your hair using a hair-dye brush or your fingers.

  • Start with your scalp. Gently massage the yogurt mixture onto it and then apply it onto your hair.

  • After you're done applying the mixture, wrap your hair in a towel and leave them alone for half an hour.

  • Then, wash the yogurt with water and dry off your hair.

Do this once a week and your hair will never be greasy and it will become healthier and glossier.

2. Egg

The egg acts as a good emulsifier when applied to the hair. It is also rich in protein and nutrients which will boost your scalp and you will notice the difference.

To make this egg remedy that will make your hair less oily and stronger, you'll need egg and lemon juice – the lemons' citric acid will help to remove the oil.

  • Crack open one or two eggs and separate their yolks. Use one egg if you can't stand its smell.

  • Add the yolks in one bowl and then stir in 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. If you are using one yolk, add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Give it a good mix.

  • Use more on the scalp and massage your hair with it.

  • Leave for either 10 minutes if its smell is too much for you or for about 30 to 40 minutes if you are okay with the smell.

  • Then, wash with a gentle shampoo to remove the egg mixture from your hair.

Only use this remedy if you can withstand the eggy smell. Coat your hair with egg once every week for the best results. It smells bad but the egg yolks do bring back life to your hair.

3. Coconut Oil

To get rid of your greasy hair, you can also fight oil with oil. Coconut oil is better than any conditioner and it can prevent sebum (oil in the hair) production as it'll provide your hair with much needed healthy oils and can balance your imbalanced sebum production.

For this remedy, you only need virgin coconut oil. The recipe is as follows:

  • Take as much coconut oil as needed in the palm of your hand and rub it all over your palm.

  • Rub your oiled palm over your scalp and massage your head so that your hair can absorb the oil.

  • Wash your hair after an hour to remove the coconut oil.

Coconut oil will not only get rid of the excessive oil in your scalp but also nourish your hair. Apply it on your hair once or twice a week. It's perfect for people who want something that smells nice.

4. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is an astringent so it'll help to remove sebum from your hair and make your hair smoother and softer to the touch.

To make your homemade aloe vera hair gel, you'll need aloe vera gel, lemon juice, and water. For the best results, I use fresh aloe vera gel. You can use the store-bought version but I don't recommend it since it can have artificial substances that might harm your hair.

  • Take one aloe vera leaf and rinse it with water. Don‎'t skip this part because it can be very itchy and irritating.

  • Scarp out 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel and put it in a bowl.

  • Add in 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice and 1 cup of water and mix well.

  • After washing your hair with shampoo, apply this aloe vera mixture onto your scalp and hair evenly.

  • Leave for a couple of minutes and then rinse with cold water to remove the gel.

This gel mixture will remove excess sebum and hydrate your scalp. Use this mixture only once a week or twice a month. Aloe vera is a good natural substitute to products with strong chemicals but if it feels itchy or irritates you, then stick to other remedies.

Choose Your Remedy

Anyone can stumble upon a problem with greasy hair but the best thing to do when that happens is to think of how to get rid of greasy hair instead of worrying about it. Use any one of the remedies mentioned above and your hair will become oil-free, healthy, and smooth in no time. Wash and brush your hair regularly. It's best to use a gentle shampoo that doesn't have alcohol and sulfates. If you use less hair color and products, it will be better for your hair and scalp. Instead of buying expensive conditioners and products that promise to remove oils, try natural remedies. You might be surprised by the results.
